چکیده

TheM7.6 Nicoya earthquake struck at the interface between the Cocos plate and the Caribbean plate on 5 September 2012 inducing a ground acceleration of 0.5 m s−2 at the Irazú-Turrialba volcanic complex. We use data from six seismic stations deployed around and atop the Irazú-Turrialba volcanic complex to show the increase of local seismic activity after the M7.6 Nicoya earthquake. The response consists in more than 300 locatable earthquakes occurring in swarm sequences along a fault system that intersects the Irazú-Turrialba volcanic complex. In addition, we point out that major aftershocks are followed by increases of seismic activity in the same region. The weak static stress variation imposed by the main slip of the Nicoya earthquake at the Irazú-Turrialba volcanic complex suggests a dynamic triggering mechanism. We expand this concept suggesting that this behavior may be similar to the one observed in the Chilean and Japanese volcanic arcs during theM8.8 2010 Maule, Chile, andM9.

Seismic cycle and plate margin deformation in Costa Rica : GPS observations 1994 - 1997

GPS observations in Costa Rica from 1994-1997 reveal a complex pattern of motion consistent with the superposition of seismic cycle and secular plate margin deformation. In the south, velocity vectors are consistent with motion of the Panama Block plus postseismic deformation following the 1991 Limon earthquake, and interseismic strain due to partial locking of the Middle America Trench (MAT) t...

Active deformation near the Nicoya Peninsula, northwestern Costa Rica, between 1996 and 2010: Interseismic megathrust coupling

[1] We use campaign and continuous GPS measurements at 49 sites between 1996 and 2010 to describe the long-term active deformation in and near the Nicoya Peninsula, northwestern Costa Rica. The observed deformation reveals partial partitioning of the Cocos-Caribbean oblique convergence into trench-parallel forearc sliver motion and less oblique thrusting on the subduction interface. The norther...

Earthquake Relocation and Focal Mechanism Determination Using Waveform Cross Correlation, Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica

The Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica directly overlies the seismogenic zone of the Middle America Trench, making it an ideal location for geophysical investigations of shallow subduction zone earthquake processes. As part of the collaborative Costa Rica Seismogenic Zone Experiment (CRSEIZE), a seismic network consisting of 20 land and 14 ocean-bottom seismometers recorded small magnitude local ea...

Monitoring transient changes within overpressured regions of subduction zones using ambient seismic noise

In subduction zones, elevated pore fluid pressure, generally linked to metamorphic dehydration reactions, has a profound influence on the mechanical behavior of the plate interface and forearc crust through its control on effective stress. We use seismic noise-based monitoring to characterize seismic velocity variations following the 2012 Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica earthquake [M w (moment mag...
